How small countries can make a big impact on climate change — TED Talk by Nicola Sturgeon
When it comes to tackling climate change, the size of a country doesn’t matter — it’s their ambition that counts, says First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon. In a rousing talk, she shares examples of small nations — from Bhutan and Fiji to her own Scotland — whose leadership and climate action are galvanizing change on the international stage. This talk is presented by Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland.
It’s one of the great talk presented on TED Countdown. If anyone curious about what TED Countdown is, Countdown is a global initiative, powered by TED and Future Stewards, to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal is to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 towards reaching net zero by 2050. It was launched October 10, 2020 with the Countdown Global Launch, a virtual event featuring five curated sessions of talks, interviews and performances. The initiative continued with the Countdown Summit in Edinburgh, Scotland, in October 2021, bringing together hundreds of leaders to share a blueprint for a beautiful net-zero future and activate millions in the lead-up to COP26. “Does size matters ?”
That’s the first question throwed by the First Minister to the TED audiences.
We often heard of the contribution of tackling climate change from big countries, but small countries matters too. Small country’s ambition, leadership and action is taking the important role too.
As a small country, Scotland, has reduced the carbon faster than any other G2O countries. The First Minister concluded that countries of all shapes and sizes must step up to this challenge. When it comes to tackling climate change, size really, really does not matter. We must think big in our ambition. We must act big in what we do, and we must be big when it comes to the impact we make. I think it’s a great message for all of us, to any countries in the world despite of the size, to act together to tackle climate change.
I recommend this talk to anyone who concern about climate change issues and anyone who cares about the global issues. This talk is inspiring and I hope we can transform more ideas into actions to contribute to reduce climate change. To anyone in the world, big countries, small countries, anywhere you are.
